The local vegetation is mainly characterized by two endemic trees, the thuya and the argan, for which the region is well known.
The thuya is a tree that only grows in Morocco, in the Atlas mountains (Essaouira, Azemour) Its amber scent, its red and spotted colour are its main features. Because of its scarcity, its exploitation is strongly regulated and its roots that are worked by the inlayers are unique and luxurious creations.
The argan tree is a rare and unique natural treasure which has centuries of tradition.
It is used in different ways, we can obtain from its fruit a precious oil – the argan oil- which is very well known for its nourishing, regenerating and restructuring properties. It has cooking and cosmetic uses. We burn its wood and also use it to feed goats and camels.
Drive along the region and observe the unique spectacle of goats seeking the fruit of the argan tree!
Endless beaches stretch around the city and offer a pleasant terrain for relaxing strolls or guided excursions. Dune landscapes extend from the «borj» to the end of the bay until the craggy rocks of Cap Sim.
From north to south the different landscapes of the region will amaze you. Undulating coasts, immense breaks or oasis in the south contrast with the huge dunes and the forests that mark out the north.
A true paradise for surfers, Essaouira and its region offers experts spots that are really appreciated. From Moulay Bouzerktoun in the north to Tafadna in the south wild beaches stretch for kilometres on the coast swept by the winds and where the waves are not recommended for beginners.
